Load securing: what does Belgian law really say about your van?

A loose drill becomes a projectile at 50 km/h. Read which rules apply, which fines you risk and how to solve it easily.

Load securing: what does Belgian law really say about your van?

A loose drill on your load floor looks harmless. Until you have to brake hard. Then that same tool becomes a projectile that shoots forward with the force of hundreds of kilos. Load securing in your van is therefore not a formality, but pure self-protection. The law is clear about it. In this article you can read what the Belgian rules really say and how to solve it easily.

What does the law say about load securing?

In Belgium and the rest of Europe, the standard is that your load must not shift, tip over or fall off the vehicle in normal road use. In concrete terms, your load must be able to withstand a braking deceleration of about 0.8 g forwards and 0.5 g sideways and backwards. In plain words: in an emergency stop, nothing may come loose.

The police can check you on this at any time. If your load is not properly secured, you risk a fine and, in serious cases, a driving ban until you put it right. In an accident involving a poorly secured load you can also be held liable, which can complicate your insurance considerably.

Did you know that the securing force must legally be enough to keep your load in place at about 0.8 g of braking deceleration? That amounts to having to hold back almost the full weight of your load from moving forward.

Why unsecured loads are so dangerous

The physics leaves little room for doubt. A 20 kg object shooting forward at 50 km/h develops an impact many times heavier than the object itself. That weight hits your seat back or, worse, your head in a fraction of a second.

Anyone who does not secure their load is effectively driving around with a hidden airbag that goes off in the wrong direction.

That is why it is best to look at your load securing in layers. Each layer absorbs part of the forces:

  • A TÜV-certified bulkhead separates the cab from the load space and stops heavy loads in an emergency stop.
  • Lashing bars and straps hold loose items firmly against the wall or floor.
  • Closed modules and drawers stop small items from flying around.
  • Anti-slip mats keep boxes and tools in place when accelerating and braking.

Load securing in practice

You get the strongest protection by combining it with smart storage. If your tools are already fixed in closed drawers and cabinets, half the work is done. For anything that stays loose, use a lashing bar with straps that you can click into place at the height you want.

A few rules of thumb you can apply straight away:

  • Place heavy material low and close to the bulkhead, not loose at the back.
  • Pull your straps tight and check them again before every long trip.
  • Never leave a loose gas cylinder or battery rolling around unsecured.
  • Distribute the weight evenly left and right for stable handling.

Is a bulkhead mandatory?

A bulkhead is not legally required in every situation, but it is the most effective way to meet the securing obligation and protect yourself. Our bulkheads are TÜV-certified, which means they have been tested for stopping heavy loads in an emergency stop. For anyone who drives with tools every day, it is an investment that literally gives you your safety back.
